| Golay Center is the spotlight business of the month for December |
The Golay Community Center will soon celebrate 30 years in the Western Wayne area. Built in 1981 many changes have occurred in programs offered and total membership, but it continues to be a prominent part of the community.
The current membership is 2650 and growing. There are over 20 programs available throughout the year. Currently the Center features spin, zumba, water aerobics, fitness boot camp, high/low aerobics, body sculpting, open volleyball, swim lessons and low impact aerobics. January will add youth basketball, lifeguarding classes, an adult volleyball league and the eighth round of Biggest Loser. February and March will add tennis clinics and youth volleyball clinics. Of course, youth football and cheerleading programs are in the fall and a full childcare program, Super Summer Fun is available for nine weeks in the summer.
The Senior Citizen Agency is housed in the Golay Center and the Center has a preschool program for children age 3 to 5 years old.
Room rentals are available for showers, reunions, business meetings and various social events. The ever popular semi-private birthday party package includes swim time in the indoor pool and a party room rental. Late nights and overnight rentals of the entire facility are also possible and are often used by church youth groups, scout troops and even after prom parties.
The Fitness Facility was made possible by individual contributions over a five year period and includes 6 treadmills, 3 ellipticals, a recumbent bike, 2 airdyne bikes and a sit down elliptical for cardio work. In addition to a full set of free weights, the Center has more than a dozen weightlifting machines to work all muscle groups. The Golay Center fundraising efforts each July help to upgrade and maintain the Fitness Facility as well as support other special projects.
Currently the Center is in the midst of a special fundraising event to support painting the pool (necessary every 4 to 5 years) and unusually large repair expenses for the pool heater and dehumidification system. An individual has offered to match dollar for dollar any funds raised through this project. This fundraiser will continue through the end of December.
In addition, presently the Golay staff is preparing for the Angel Tree project. This is a community wide effort to provide Christmas presents for children up to age 14 who might not have a Christmas otherwise. Sponsors are needed for the Angels as well as wrapping paper and individuals willing to wrap presents. Please call 478-5565 to volunteer or just stop in at the Center 8 am-8pm Monday through Friday.
